Your kind of afternoon
Let the lights set the pace.
Covent Garden changes once the light goes. The piazza glows, the alleys narrow into lantern-lit lanes and the theatres start to fill. This self-guided winter walk links six corners of the neighbourhood where the season feels strongest, in an easy loop from and back to Covent Garden station.
It is made for anyone who wants Christmas London without queuing for a big attraction, for theatre-goers who like a story to go with the marquee, and for photographers who like lit streets and quiet corners. Every stop gives you a short mission and a story to find, and I keep most of the route a surprise until you are there.
Out on the walk
What you'll do on the walk
Find the spot under the market roof where the lights feel like a ceiling, and stand there for a full minute before you take a photo. Duck down the lantern-lit lane to the Lamb & Flag, then cross the road to watch Drury Lane fill up for the show.
Fox spotting chance
Busy streets, bright lights. Any fox you spot here has earned a mention.

Curious corners along the way
A taste of your afternoon.
A glimpse of the place

Covent Garden Market
Find the spot under the market roof where the lights feel most like a ceiling, and stand there for a full minute before you take a photo.
A surprise stop
A church with a grand columned front, and a very good reason nobody uses those doors.
Lamb & Flag
A tiny pub down a narrow lane with a rough past. Imagine the lane lit only by lanterns.
A surprise stop
A courtyard with the bluest door and the pinkest wall in the neighbourhood. Pick the one you would live behind.
A surprise stop
A junction where seven streets meet. Count them, then walk out by one you did not come in on.
Theatre Royal Drury Lane
Cross the road so the whole columned front fits in one look, and listen for the pre-show buzz.
The rest stays a surprise. The guide gives you every stop, address, story, photo idea and direction, one tap at a time.
Before you set off
Plan your wander.
Route details, timing & access
- The walk is easy and flat, on pavements and cobbles. Wear comfortable shoes that cope with wet stone.
- The guide suggests an early-evening start, so you catch the lights coming on. Fridays and Saturdays in December are the busiest, and a weekday around 17:00 gives you room to look up. Lights and displays change every year, so treat the walk as a mood rather than a checklist. See coventgarden.london for what is on.
- Check pub and church opening times on the day. The pub is tiny and fills up early.
