Your kind of afternoon
A small adventure for curious legs.
Richmond gives a family afternoon room to breathe. Boats pass along the Thames, meadows change with the season and the trees make even grown-ups feel small. There is time to pause, compare discoveries and decide together whether the next adventure should involve a hill.
Four core missions turn the walk into a shared game of looking, imagining and noticing. Trivia and Wanderer Tips add context without a long lecture; illustrated Walk Bingo gives small explorers another reason to keep their eyes up. Finish at Petersham Gate, or choose the optional uphill hunt for a distant view before returning to the gate.
Out on the walk
What you'll do on the walk
Watch the boats go by at Richmond Riverside and let small imaginations do the rest. Look out for the grazing locals on Petersham Meadows (wildlife keeps its own timetable), meet some very old trees, and take the uphill bonus only if everyone votes yes.
Fox spotting chance
Plenty of green and quiet ground. Dusk is your best bet.

Curious corners along the way
A taste of your family afternoon.
Richmond Riverside
River sounds, passing boats and plenty of room for a small explorer’s imagination. A familiar riverside becomes somewhere to pay attention together.
Petersham Meadows
A change of pace beside a historic meadow. Seasonal grazing animals, birds and little details reward patient looking; wildlife has its own timetable.
The rest stays a surprise. The guide gives you every stop, address, story, photo idea and direction, one tap at a time.

Route details, timing & access
- The core walk ends at Petersham Gate rather than looping back to Richmond Station. Allow extra time and fare for the return bus; check live services and direction before boarding.
- Distances are planning estimates. The optional out-and-back adds about 1.2 km and 45–60 minutes, including the climb, mission and return to Petersham Gate.
- Meadow and riverside paths can be muddy, narrow or uneven. Do not assume a fully step-free route. The steep bonus climb is a poor buggy option.
- Keep children close by the river and at road crossings. Stay at least 50 metres from deer; do not approach or feed grazing animals. Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed.
- Start in daylight and check weather, flooding, park access and transport before setting off. Pack water and snacks; bus travel and refreshments are extra.

Questions
What age is the Richmond family walk for?
It is designed for families with children aged 6–11. Read missions aloud and let everyone choose how to join in. Younger children may need a carrier, buggy or more breaks; check path conditions first.
How long is the walk?
Allow about 2–2½ hours for the 3.5 km core walk from Richmond Station to Petersham Gate, with time for missions and pauses. Return travel is extra. The optional bonus adds about 1.2 km and 45–60 minutes, returning to the gate.
Do we have to do the bonus stop?
No. Four core missions complete the adventure. The fifth stop is an optional uphill out-and-back; skip it if little legs have had enough.
Will we definitely see deer or cows?
No. Cattle are seasonal visitors and deer choose their own routes. The guide gives families other things to notice and imagine when animals are elsewhere.
Is this a guided group tour?
No. This is a self-guided digital walk. Choose your own start time, take breaks and explore at your family’s pace.
What will I receive?
Two digital PDF files, available through Etsy after payment: the Large Phone walking guide and the separate printable Walk Bingo. No physical product is shipped. Save the PDFs before leaving; live maps, Spotify and other web links need an internet connection.
“A very nice tour with some great local suggestions. Very nice to be able to wander at your own pace instead of following a guide or group.”
