Your kind of afternoon
Follow the Stones before the stadiums.
Before the private jets and country estates, there was Soho: narrow streets, smoky clubs and offices buzzing with ambition. This self-guided walk follows the early Rolling Stones through six corners of Soho where they rehearsed, recorded and rubbed shoulders with the rest of the 1960s scene.
It is a one-way route from Tottenham Court Road station to Green Park station, so you finish next to a Tube stop. It is not a museum tour: every stop gives you a short mission and a story to find, and I keep most of the route a surprise until you are there.
Out on the walk
What you'll do on the walk
Close your eyes for a moment (safely) on Denmark Street and listen for the instruments of old Tin Pan Alley. Pause outside Ronnie Scott’s, where jazz and blues laid the groundwork, then walk the scruffy, electric streets where the Stones learned to rock.
Fox spotting chance
Busy streets, bright lights. Any fox you spot here has earned a mention.

Field notes from the route

Denmark Street
Close your eyes for a moment, safely, and listen for the instruments. This lane, nicknamed Tin Pan Alley, was the heart of the British music business.
A surprise stop
A plain-looking building with a big recording history. Imagine the band arriving in 1969 while Soho hummed around them.
Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club
Pause outside and listen. Soho's musical roots ran deeper than rock and roll, and jazz and blues shaped the sound the Stones grew from.
A surprise stop
A former club on a busy street. Picture the queues, the amps being hauled through doors and a tiny stage packed with Britain's loudest new bands.
A surprise stop
A pub round the corner from a very famous street, and an early haunt of the band. Step in and spot what could have survived from the 1960s.
A surprise stop
A tucked-away alley that feels frozen in time, and the notorious members' club that once hid inside it. The finale.
The rest stays a surprise. The guide gives you every stop, address, story, photo idea and direction, one tap at a time.

Route details, timing & access
- The walk is easy and short, mostly on pavements, with plenty of pubs and cafes along the way. Allow about 2 hours.
- The guide suggests starting between 11:00 and 12:00, when Soho's narrow streets are calmer before the lunch rush and easier for tracing the old venues.
- Ronnie Scott's is still a working venue with live music most evenings, so check ronniescotts.co.uk for listings. Check pub opening hours on the day.
