Your kind of afternoon
A little stranger than your usual afternoon.
Follow the legends through an atmospheric village, with cemetery gates, curious details and a little mission at every stop.
Highgate is one of North London's most atmospheric villages, and its ghost stories are famously good. This self-guided walk links six of them into an easy one-way route from Highgate station to Archway station, at your own pace, with no group and no fixed timetable.
You start in Pond Square with a legend involving a chicken, stand outside the gates of Highgate Cemetery, and meet a haunted pub, a poet and a park along the way. Every stop gives you a short mission and a story to find rather than a lecture to sit through, and I keep most of the route a surprise until you are there.
Out on the walk
What you'll do on the walk
Stand in Pond Square and picture the legend that refuses to leave it. Pass a pub with a haunted reputation, then study the cemetery gates and pick the detail that feels most Gothic. The vampire panic is in the guide. Sleep well.
Fox spotting chance
Plenty of green and quiet ground. Dusk is your best bet.

Route details, timing & access
- The walk is easy and mostly on pavements, with one steady climb up Highgate Hill and Swain's Lane.
- The guide suggests starting in the late afternoon, so the light fades by the cemetery gates. Entry to Highgate Cemetery is ticketed and its opening rules change, so check highgatecemetery.org before you go. The walk stays outside the gates.
- Check pub and park opening times on the day, and bring water. Archway station is at the end, so you can head straight home.
