Your kind of afternoon

A little countryside. Still London.

Make time for a longer afternoon together: open views, grand estates and quiet village corners, with room for a pub or café pause.

Hampstead is a village where ancient woodland meets Georgian grandeur and artistic spirit, and it is one of the easiest ways to feel you have left London without leaving it. This self-guided walk is a full loop from and back to Hampstead station, taking in the Heath, a grand house, a historic pub, the famous view from Parliament Hill and the lanes of Hampstead village.

It is a longer, more rewarding walk than most of our routes. Every one of the eight stops gives you a short mission and a story to find rather than a lecture to sit through, and I keep part of the route a surprise until you are standing there.

Out on the walk

What you'll do on the walk

Stand by Whitestone Pond and spot the clues that you are still very much in London. Cross the heath to the Spaniards Inn and pick the detail with the best story to tell. Finish on Flask Walk, choosing the shopfront that feels most Hampstead: not too polished, a little eccentric.

Best timeMorning, starting 10:00 to 11:00
  • The walk is about 7 km and rated medium: there are gentle slopes and uneven paths on the Heath, so wear comfortable shoes with a good grip and allow about 4 hours 30 minutes. There is no cafe at the Hill Garden, so bring water.
  • The guide suggests starting between 10:00 and 11:00. That gets you to Burgh House with time to spare before it closes at 4pm, and the Heath is quieter early. Starting after 13:00 means you would probably arrive after it closes.
  • Kenwood House and its grounds are generally open daily, but check englishheritage.org.uk for seasonal hours and gallery closures. Check pub opening times on the day, and Burgh House opening days at burghhouse.org.uk.
