Your kind of afternoon
Earn a different view of Edinburgh.
Edinburgh is a city you earn on foot. This self-guided walk starts and ends at Edinburgh Waverley and links the Old Town's narrow closes and cobbled slopes with the open gardens below and the skyline view from Calton Hill.
Each of the six stops comes with a small mission and a story: choose a close to follow, look up until you spot a carved detail you missed, and keep walking past the first viewpoint on the hill. The PDF adds a Spotify playlist for the route and a printable Walk Bingo card.
Out on the walk
What you'll do on the walk
Let the city drop away beneath you on the Castle esplanade and pick one skyline detail to meet later on foot. Wind down through the Old Town, then climb Calton Hill. Do not stop at the first viewpoint. The better one is earned.
Fox spotting chance
Keep an eye on quiet corners and front gardens, especially towards dusk.

A surprise stop
A famous street of narrow closes. Choose one and follow it just far enough to feel the Old Town narrow around you.
A surprise stop
Pause outside a crown-topped spire and look up until you notice a carved detail you missed at first glance.
A surprise stop
A curved, colourful street. Walk it once for colour and once for levels.
A surprise stop
A drop into the gardens until the city noise softens, and an angle where castle, trees and railway overlap.
Calton Hill
Do not stop at the first viewpoint. Walk a little further and choose the panorama that feels earned.
The rest stays a surprise. The guide gives you every stop, address, story, photo idea and direction, one tap at a time.

Route details, timing & access
- The walk is rated moderate: expect cobbles, some slopes and a proper climb to finish at Calton Hill. Wear comfortable shoes with good grip and allow 2 to 2.5 hours, more if you go inside anywhere.
- Entry to Edinburgh Castle and St Giles' Cathedral is separate from the route, and opening times change through the year, so check edinburghcastle.scot and stgiles.net before you go.
- Edinburgh weather changes quickly. Bring a light waterproof, and check the weather link in the guide. The guide also suggests two coffee stops along the way.

How long does the Edinburgh walking tour take?
About 2 to 2.5 hours at a relaxed pace, covering roughly 4.4 km and 6 stops. You can stretch it with a coffee or a visit inside one of the buildings.
Where does the Edinburgh walk start and finish?
It starts and finishes at Edinburgh Waverley station, so it is easy to reach by train.
Is the Edinburgh walk suitable for everyone?
It is rated moderate. There are cobbles, slopes and a climb up Calton Hill, so it suits anyone comfortable walking about 4.4 km on uneven ground.
How do you get up Calton Hill on this walk?
Calton Hill is the last stop. From Princes Street Gardens it is a 12 to 15 minute uphill walk, the one proper climb of the route, and the guide gives you the directions.
