Your kind of afternoon

Let London have its rom-com moment.

Notting Hill is where London's pastel houses look like film sets, and this self-guided walk is built around that. It is an easy loop from and back to Notting Hill Gate station, through quiet mews, colourful streets and the busy heart of Portobello Road, at your own pace with no group and no fixed timetable.

The walk is made for anyone who loves a rom-com moment, a good front door or a slow wander. Every stop gives you a short mission and a story to find rather than a lecture to sit through, and I keep most of the route a surprise until you are standing there.

Out on the walk

What you'll do on the walk

Lose yourself among the antique stalls on Portobello Road and pick one item you wish could tell you its whole history. Resisting the urge to buy everything is part of the mission. Then choose the front door in St Luke’s Mews you would secretly live behind.

Best timeLate morning, before the market crowds
  • The walk is easy, flat and short, mostly on pavements and cobbles. Wear comfortable shoes and allow about 2 hours 15 minutes.
  • The guide suggests starting between 10:00 and 11:00, when Portobello and the mews are quieter and better lit. Saturday afternoon is the busiest time, when the market fills the road and the narrow mews get packed. The antiques section is at its biggest on Saturdays and usually appears on Fridays too. Weekdays are quieter and more local.
  • Many of the houses on the route are private homes. Enjoy them from the public pavement and keep doorways clear. Check shop opening hours on the day, including the bookshop at thenottinghillbookshop.co.uk.
