Your kind of afternoon
Follow Islington’s quieter stories.
Islington rewards the unhurried. This self-guided walk starts and finishes at Angel station and follows a gentle loop through antique arcades, bookshops, old theatres and along Regent's Canal, with a short mission and a story at every stop.
It is less a checklist of landmarks than a reason to look twice: pick a book on a stranger's say-so, find the film title that matches your mood, and spend ten minutes on the towpath without checking your phone. The PDF also includes a curated Spotify playlist and a printable Walk Bingo card.
Out in Islington
What you'll do on the walk
Browse the antique windows of Camden Passage. Make a literary discovery, notice the cinema details at Screen on the Green, then trade Upper Street’s bustle for a pause beside Regent’s Canal.
Fox spotting chance
Keep an eye on quiet corners and front gardens, especially towards dusk.

A taste of your afternoon.
Field notes from the route

Camden Passage
Walk the length of the passage and find the most beautifully useless object in an antique window. Do not buy it.
A surprise stop
A bookshop, a handwritten recommendation and a choice to make based on nothing else.
Screen on the Green
Look up at the neon and find the film title that best describes your mood today.
A surprise stop
A theatre entrance and a pivot point. Notice how the street changes around you.
A surprise stop
The Drift itself: ten minutes of walking with no phone, no watch and no photographs.
A surprise stop
A pint, a comfortable spot and a canal doing very little.
The rest stays a surprise. The guide gives you every stop, address, story, photo idea and direction, one tap at a time.

Route details, timing & access
- The walk is easy and flat, and mostly on pavements and the canal towpath. The towpath is shared with cyclists, so keep to one side and stay aware of bikes.
- The route works well as an afternoon that ends with a drink. Check shop, cinema and pub opening hours on the day, and see almeida.co.uk for what is on at the theatre.
- Angel station is at the start and the end, so you finish where you began. The guide has toilet, coffee and bottle-refill links for the area.
