Your kind of afternoon
Meet the survivors of a vanished palace.
The Crystal Palace burned down in 1936, but its afterlife is scattered all over this hill. This self-guided walk follows the survivors: a Victorian railway subway with its red-and-cream vaulting intact, sphinx-guarded terraces that once faced an enormous glass building, and the world's first dinosaur sculptures.
You finish where Crystal Palace feels most local, in the independent shops of the Triangle and a bookshop on the hill that has been there since 1997. Every stop gives you a short mission and a detail to find rather than a lecture to sit through, and I keep most of the route a surprise until you are there.
Out on the walk
What you'll do on the walk
Find the brickwork that gives away a hidden Victorian subway. Meet the world’s first dinosaur statues and pick the one modern science would least recognise. Then stand where a glass palace once stood and try to picture it burning down in a single night.
Fox spotting chance
Wild ground, big trees, long grass. Look up from the map now and then.

Curious corners along the way
A taste of your afternoon.
A glimpse of the place

Crystal Palace Subway
From the entrance, hunt for the red-and-cream brickwork that hints at the vaulted subway hidden beneath the road.
A surprise stop
Stand between the sphinxes and line up the terraces: can you picture the enormous glass Palace filling the empty skyline?
Dinosaur Statues
Pick the creature that looks most wrong to modern eyes. Bonus points if you can guess what Victorian science misunderstood.
A surprise stop
Reach the centre without retracing your steps. No hedge-peeking shortcuts until you have been properly humbled.
A surprise stop
Walk one side of the Triangle slowly and choose the independent shop, café or market detour you would actually come back for.
A surprise stop
Ask for one staff recommendation you would never have picked from the cover alone. That is your final Crystal Palace souvenir.
The rest stays a surprise. The guide gives you every stop, address, story, photo idea and direction, one tap at a time.

Route details, timing & access
- The walk is easy and mostly flat, on park paths and pavements, and starts and finishes at the same station, so there is no one-way timing to plan around.
- The Crystal Palace Subway interior only opens on announced open days, usually with free timed tickets. The exterior is the point either way. The guide suggests a weekday morning, when the dinosaur trail and the maze are quietest before school groups and weekend crowds arrive.
- Most of the route is free parkland and street wandering. Save your spend for a coffee, a market snack or something from an independent shop. Bookseller Crow is the last stop, so give yourself five minutes to browse before heading back to the station. You never need to buy anything.

Questions
How long does the Crystal Palace walking tour take?
About 3 hours 45 minutes at a relaxed pace, covering roughly 5.4 km and 6 stops. It's easy to shorten or stretch because it's self-guided, and the maze alone can absorb as long as you let it.
Can I go inside the Crystal Palace Subway?
Only on announced open days, usually with free timed tickets that need booking ahead. The walk itself does not depend on it: the surviving red-and-cream brickwork outside is what stop one is about.
Where does the Crystal Palace walk start and finish?
Both at Crystal Palace station, so you can take the train there, wander, and take the same train home without thinking about a route back.
What will I get when I buy it?
You receive the PDF guide in four editions (Mobile, Large Phone, Tablet and A4 Print) plus a printable Walk Bingo card as an instant download from Etsy. Nothing is shipped.
“A very nice tour with some great local suggestions. Very nice to be able to wander at your own pace instead of following a guide or group.”
